Frequently asked questions
What kinds of files can I compare?
Compare text and code, JSON, plist, XML, YAML, CSV, TSV, images, text extracted from PDF and RTF files, and items inside ZIP archives. Binary files and two files of different types use a read-only hexadecimal view.
Can I edit while comparing?
You can edit and save text in a regular two-file text comparison. Table, structure, image, hexadecimal, ZIP-content, and three-file comparisons are read-only. Check the edited side and destination when saving.
How do I compare three files?
Select three files in File Comparison on the start screen. Compare changes in files 2 and 3 against file 1. This view is read-only, and CSV and TSV files are displayed as text too.
How do I copy files that exist in only one folder?
Compare the two folders, select items that exist on one side only, and copy them to the other side. Check the items, direction, and destination first. Viewing the comparison alone does not change the original files.
What if a file or folder cannot be opened?
Select it again on the comparison screen. If a previously opened item cannot be found, choose its current location in the selection panel.
Where can I find my backups?
Open Pairline > Settings > Backups. You can also change the location or delete a selected backup there. Check the pre-save backup setting and the backup made for the save operation. A backup restores only the content captured at that time, so keep a separate copy of important files too.
Are files sent elsewhere for comparison?
Comparisons run on your Mac, without automatically sending their contents to the developer’s server. Files in a synced folder such as iCloud Drive sync according to that service’s settings.
How do I report a problem?
Tell us the app version and build number, macOS version, what you were comparing, what went wrong, the steps to reproduce it, and any message shown. Use a small sample that reproduces the issue instead of sending confidential files.
